The Short Version
Volunteer Sign-Up Made Easier
From my experience, it wasn't easy to find volunteer opportunities. I thought other people would face the same obstacles. The project aimed to develop a solution to encourage more people to volunteer.
Problem: Finding events and people to volunteer with is difficult.
Although users utilize the internet and online platforms, I discovered many users face the same challenges in locating opportunities. They also find motivation in volunteering with friends.
Goal: Improve the volunteer process by making the search and sign-up process easier.
The goal of the project is to help aspiring volunteers find opportunities and motivation. I wanted to design a solution that simplified the search and sign-up process for volunteers to encourage more individuals to volunteer.
Solution: A mobile app that makes it easy to find events and sign-up with others.
People had a difficult time searching, registering, and volunteering with others. Go Give is a mobile application to address those frustrations and encourage more individuals to volunteer.

Research and Identify Opportunities
Why don’t more people volunteer?
A study conducted by Americorp from September 2020-2021 found compelling statistics of the financial impact on communities. With about a quarter of Americans volunteering, there is still room for growth in the market.
60.7 million volunteers
$122.9 billion in value
To learn about volunteering and the problem space, I used the following research methods to understand pain points with volunteers.
  • Competitive analysis
  • Surveys
  • User Interviews
Competitor Analysis
I conducted research with 4 volunteer platforms to understand what is offered to volunteers in the current market.
Weaknesses
Vehicle Info & Location
Info & Location
Extensive Sign-up
  • The established sites are bureaucratic, with extensive sign-up processes and long forms.
  • Hard to find information on specific volunteer events
Weaknesses
Limited Events & Info
  • Many sites have limited volunteer opportunities and information.
  • They don't allow direct sign up for events.
The strengths: Vehicle locations and safety briefings
Competitors and Lime all have visible and clear vehicle details and safety briefings.
  • Visible battery life and vehicle information
  • Map view and parking locations
  • Rider safety information
The opportunity: Lack of loyalty programs
Although discounts and long term rentals are offered on competitors' platforms, there isn't a program that offers incentives to use one platform over another.
User Surveys
I surveyed 26 individuals, with Google surveys, about their experience volunteering. The surveys focused on when they last volunteered, what they looked for when volunteering, and what frustrations they faced.
Major insight: People want to help but it is hard.
Major insight: They struggle finding places and people.
Testimonials from respondents voiced their frustrations and struggles. They were asked, “What would encourage you to volunteer again?”
User Interviews
I interviewed 6 individuals who have volunteered in the past but haven’t volunteered in the last year. The goal was to understand why they haven’t volunteered recently.
Questions asked to participants:
  • Describe your experiences with volunteering?
  • Can you walk me through the process on how you would look up volunteer opportunities?
  • What kind of information would you look up online for volunteer opportunities? Why?
  • How often do you volunteer? Would you want to volunteer more often? If so, what prevents you from doing so?
Affinity Map
Insight 1
Information is Difficult to Locate
  • All 6 participants say it can be challenging to locate information about the volunteer opportunity, such as contact and commitment needed for the volunteer role.
Insight 2
People Lack Motivation to Volunteer
  • All 6 participants say they would like to volunteer again.
  • 4 out of 6 say their friends don't really volunteer and would be encouraged to go if they had friends or a group to volunteer with.
User Persona
From the information gathered through user interviews, 1 User persona was created to represent our target users during the design process.
Ideation
Improve The Volunteer Experience
How might we help aspiring volunteers find opportunities and motivation?
After identifying user concerns and needs in research, I developed ideas to target both user concerns in searching for events and volunteering with others. I created a storyboard to visualize the user journey and a list of features needed in the application to help users search and sign up with others.

Design Development
Design Screen Layouts
Wireframe Developments
After creating a story of the user and a list of key features, I created digitized designs in Figma to outline the layout. These help me further conceptualize my solutions on screen.
A Compassionate Volunteer Style Guide
The goal of the design is to portray a friendly, compassionate, and supportive environment for volunteers.
  • The logo is simple yet compelling.
  • A compassionate tone with the heart.
  • A friendly element from the V shape open arms
  • The colors are used in moderation to make the buttons stand out.
  • The cool green gives a tranquil ambiance.
  • The bright orange adds a vibrant-youthful energy.
Add color and pictures
I applied the visual elements listed in the style guide to the screens. The developed screens focus on searching and signing up for an event.
User Testing
Conduct Usability Testing
After designing the solution in Figma, I conducted my moderated usability testing with 6 participants over Zoom. The test consisted of creating an account, signing up for an event, and inviting a friend.
Positives Results: Account Creation and Searches
  • 100% of users felt the account creation process was straight forward and easy
  • 100% of users felt the process of searching and finding a volunteer opportunity intuitive.
User Concerns: Inviting Friends and Results Page
  • 67% of users were confused on how to invite people to the volunteer event.
  • 67% of users were unsure about how the results page was sorted.
Iterations
Prioritize Two Changes
Iteration 1: Provide More Context on the Invite Feature
Concern: Users were unsure how to invite a friend to a volunteer event
Before
  • Users didn't know they could sign up for an event and invite a friend.
  • The onboarding screen didn't specify to users that they could invite a friend to an event.
After
  • I expanded the onboarding screen and specified that users could invite friends to volunteer events.
Iteration 2: Provide Context on Availability
Concern: The information doesn't showcase all possible dates and availability
Before
  • The screen lacked information on total time and availability for sign-up spots.
After
  • Redesigned date, time, and availability page to provide users with more information in a scannable layout.
Final Designs & Prototype
A User-friendly Volunteer Experience
The goal of the designs was to create a user-friendly experience for volunteers to register for events and invite others to these opportunities. A full look into the prototype where users can search and sign up with friends.
Find exactly what you are looking for
The Go Give App lets users find exactly what they need with easy search, sort and filter features.
Volunteer with friends and make a greater impact
The invite feature allows users to easily send events to friends for easy group sign ups.
Takeaways & Next steps
Retrospect
A Product Doesn’t Need to be Good at Everything
There were so many features and options that I wanted to include in the product to address all the opportunities unavailable in the market. However, I realized a product doesn’t need to be good at everything to be successful.
  • I spent too much time worrying about too many features and not enough on the most valuable elements for users.
  • This taught me the importance of specializing in a concept can make all the difference.
There’s More Than One Right Answer
Since there weren't many competitors in the volunteer mobile application market, I was unsure if my designs were viable and presented my designs in meetings.
  • I received a lot of mixed opinions about the designs.
  • This showed me you can't please everyone.
  • Just be confident in your design decisions with evidence to support your reasons.
Next Steps
Sign-Up Screenings & Community Design Considerations
With the iterations applied to the design, I would continue forward with testing both with moderated and unmoderated participants to gain insight from a larger pool of participants. There are also more areas to expand on and consider.
  • How can we integrate community groups to create a stronger support system amongst users?
  • How do users sign up to events that require additional screening and certification?
